Starting my O-1 VISA application PROCESS

I've always dreamed of moving to the US, but I thought it was almost impossible as a Spaniard.

This week I'm happy to share that I started the process to get my O1 Visa! πŸŽ‰ The disclaimer is that NOBODY guarantees that I'll get the VISA, but I'm so excited to put all my energy and try to make it happen. πŸ™Œ

In this post, I want to share more about the process if more people like me want to do the same.

Why now? 2020 is an inflection year

Three months ago, I shared my idea to move outside of Spain. Back then my main focus was Europe since, being a European citizen, that would be easiest. But then I thought, why not thinking bigger?

I could not have expected that 2020 would be the year to reconnect with my motivations, goals, and dreams: I quit my job, joined a startup, changed my role from frontend Tech Lead into Growth Product Manager at StreamYard, and I'm starting the O1 Visa process πŸ˜²πŸ’ƒ

I'm becoming more and more risk-tolerant, which was at the core of this decision – but that's content for another post, so subscribe :P. Today, let's explain what the O-1 Visa is.

What is an O-1 visa in the USA?

The O-1 Visa is meant for Individuals with Extraordinary Ability or Achievement. It's probably one of the most challenging Visas to obtain, and it’s most common for movie actors, directors, musicians, entrepreneurs, or individuals with high capacities.

There are other Visas like H-1B or J-1. I like the O-1 Visa because it mainly depends on you to make a strong case to convince USCIS (the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services). Other visas rely on a lottery, and it will take longer to get a result.

How is the process to get an O1 visa

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, and this is based on the steps I'm doing to start my VISA process.

I only started the process on Monday, so I’m still early. For now, I can only tell you the first few steps I’m taking to kick off the process. As the process keeps going, I’ll share more details for those that are interested in it.

In my case, the case preparation will take around four months.

  1. Find a specialized lawyer in handling O-1 Visa and who will make a strong case for you.
  2. Start putting together lots of documents about your background. This will highly depend on what’s your experience and which type of individual you are: a. Educational certificates. b. Impact on your field (gathering former employees testimonials or other people in the industry who can defend your case). c. Significant contribution in your area (posts, articles, talks, etc.) d. Events you speak at and be a judge in tech competitions
  3. Work hand in hand with your lawyer to advance your case.
